Outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current implementation of video assistant referees (VAR), suggesting that officials lack the proficiency to effectively utilize the technology. Premier League clubs are poised to deliberate on the future of VAR during their upcoming annual general meeting on June 6.
Introduced in 2019 to aid on-field referees in critical match decisions, VAR has been embroiled in numerous contentious incidents since its inception. Klopp emphasized the need for a review of how VAR is employed, rather than advocating for its outright elimination.
Klopp’s sentiments were fueled by Liverpool’s involvement in a highly disputed VAR ruling earlier in the season, where a goal by Luis Diaz against Tottenham Hotspur was disallowed due to an incorrect offside call. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) acknowledged the error, highlighting the fallibility of the system.
Despite these frustrations, Liverpool is reportedly inclined to retain VAR, although Klopp himself admitted he would vote against it due to its current implementation issues.
As Klopp bids farewell to Liverpool after an eventful tenure, he reflected on the intensity of his final week at the club. The 56-year-old manager, who led Liverpool to significant success including a Champions League victory and their first league title in three decades, acknowledged his team’s achievements while recognizing areas where more could have been accomplished.
