From Dreams to Reality: Charlie Smyth’s Journey to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints

At the age of 18, Charlie Smyth harbored a bold ambition: to leapfrog the conventional route and vault straight into the NFL. Fast forward to last week, and Smyth’s dream has materialized into a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, marking a significant milestone in his journey from Gaelic football goalkeeper to NFL kicker.

Smyth’s ascent to the NFL is particularly noteworthy as he becomes the inaugural Irishman to secure a spot with an NFL team through the International Player Pathway (IPP) program. Reflecting on his teenage audacity, Smyth revealed that he once penned an email to the NFL seeking guidance on breaking into the sport.

“I just thought I could skip it all and go straight to the NFL back when I was 18. It really has come full circle,” Smyth remarked, highlighting his self-belief in his ability to transition his skills from Gaelic football, particularly in free-kicks, to American football.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, the 22-year-old expressed his determination to prove himself worthy of a starting position with the Saints. Despite acknowledging the challenge posed by the team’s incumbent kicker, Smyth exuded confidence in his capacity to impress during training camp.

The journey to securing a contract with the Saints saw Smyth navigate through the rigorous Combine in Indianapolis and deliver a standout performance during Pro Day in Florida, culminating in a surreal moment of signing the dotted line.

“For me, it has just been so special because I have just been such a fan of the sport,” Smyth shared, illustrating the profound significance of his achievement.

Aside from his NFL pursuits, Smyth recently obtained a degree in primary school teaching with an emphasis on the Irish language. However, with his NFL aspirations now realized, Smyth finds himself on the brink of a new chapter, one where he may never have to step into a classroom again.

As Smyth eagerly anticipates the opportunity to showcase his talents in the illustrious Superdome before thousands of spectators, he remains grounded in his gratitude for the journey that has led him to this remarkable juncture.
